Landlords and tenants to receive green treatment

New Government plans to make UK homes warmer and cheaper to operate has been received positively by the National Landlord’s Association (NLA).

According to the report, private landlords and their tenants will “benefit greatly” from the introduction of a long-term loan scheme aimed at urging property owners to invest in green technology to reduce gas and electricity bills.

Chris Norris, NLA policy manager, said: “It is reassuring that these proposals will be available across all types of tenure. It is hoped these measures will remove some of the barriers to making all accommodation less damaging to the environment.”

The details of the loan scheme that would enable this to be carried out has raised questions, however, as the new debt would be attached to the property rather than the borrower, meaning a new kind of mortgage would need to be introduced.
